Running (# 463)—January 24, 2004 Bill Shaw I remember my first marathon. As I crossed the finish line in Houston on Jan. 17, 1986, in 4:17:44 (clock time before chips), I was hyperventilating. I was in tears of pain and joy. I vowed to my wife as she looked at me anxiously through the fence that I would never run a marathon again. I ran nine more. Training for a marathon and finishing the 26.2-mile distance is unexplainable to anyone who has never tried. Just getting to the starting line requires discipline, character and prudent training. Many runners train hard for four or five months only to fall victim to overtraining and injury; sadly, other runners train five or six months and drop out before sight of the finish line. Not Kevin Regis and KellyAnne Colosimo of Lake Jackson. Regis, 45, was the top local finisher in the 2003 Houston Marathon in 2:55:51; this year on Jan 18, Regis went the distance in 2:57:51 and finished 73rd in his gender and 79th overall at a 6:46 mile clip. Colosimo, 38, was the top local female finisher in 4:06:08. Colosimo finished in the top 1000 women in 446 and 2037 overall with a 9:23 mile pace. “It was a fantastic day for the marathon,” said Colosimo. “The weather was a little cool, but heck this is Texas, and it could've been 80 outside, so we'll take the cooler air. There was a headwind at some points, but thankfully we turn enough times that it wasn't a hassle for too long.” Regis and Colosimo were among the 34 south Brazoria County Houston Marathon finishers, 20 males and 14 females. Phillip Athey, 42, of Lake Jackson in 3:13:51 and Edouard Groguhe, 39, of Angleton rounded out the top three local male marathon finishers. Samantha Conn, 19, of Clute (4:26:10) Emily Hargrave, 31, of Angleton (4:25:06) were the second and third local female finishers across the line. Susan Walters, 40, of Wallis and Sue Wheeler, 43, of Houston, active Brazosport Area Road Runners Association members, deserve special recognition for their respective 3:15:07 and 3:45:23 marathon finishes. Results of south Brazoria County finishers in the marathon, the half-marathon and the 5K on Jan. 18 are on page 2B. (The full results, revised and updated later last week, are posted at www.HPHoustonMarathon.com.) Fifty-six south Brazoria County athletes, 28 males and 28 females, finished the 13.1 half marathon. Devin Theriot, 40, of Richwood led the locals in 1:37:46, a 7:27 race pace, followed by Angletonians David Henry, 16, in 1:39:26 and Edwin Quarles, 38, in 1:42:11. The top three half-marathon female finishers represented three communities. Liz Hertenberger, 36, of Rosharon finished first among locals in 1:47:45, an 8:13 pace, followed by Jenny Heinlein, 27, of Clute in 1:51:15 and Felicia Little, 35, of Lake Jackson in 1:52:37. Paul Hubenak, 32, of Rosharon led the 22 local 5K runners, 11 men and 11 women, in a 26:13 finish in the 3.1 mile contest, an 8:27 pace. The venerable Orville Kremmer, 72, from Lake Jackson was the second local 5K male finisher and second in the 70 and over age group in 26:34, followed by Brent Belgard, 20, of Rosharon in 26:29. Another active BARRA member, Carlo Deason, 35, of Houston finished the 5K in 17:12, a 5:33 pace, ninth overall and first in his age division. The top local 5K female finishers hail from Lake Jackson. Erin Kibodeaux, 15, finished first in 26:50, an 8:39 pace, followed by Melissa Murray, 15, in 26:15 and Jennifer Lawson, 24, in 28:47. Congratulations to all local finishers. I hope to see you at the Spectacle Spectacular 5K/10K in Angleton on Saturday.
